Cleaning plastic products
Plastic shaker cups are extremely popular in everyday life: whether it's for making protein powders, smoothies or other drinks, many people use them before, after training or even during breaks at work. In order for these cups to maintain their function and aesthetic appearance for a long time, it's worth paying attention to proper care and cleaning. The following guide will help you keep your shaker hygienic and odor-free.
Material knowledge and preparations
Most plastic shakers are made of polypropylene or other food-safe plastics. These materials are lightweight, durable, and usually can withstand hot water. However, harsh chemicals, extreme temperatures (such as boiling water), or drinks with strong colors and flavors left in them for long periods of time can cause discoloration or unpleasant odors over time.
Before starting the cleaning process, always check if your shaker cup is dishwasher safe. This is usually indicated on the bottom of the product or in the included instructions.
Manual cleaning
- Disassembly: First, always disassemble the shaker into as many pieces as possible: remove the lid, cap, and remove the mixing insert or grid. This will give you easy access to all surfaces and prevent dirt from accumulating on sensitive parts.
- Rinse: Always rinse your shaker immediately after use, especially if you've mixed milk or protein in it. This will prevent any remaining drink from drying out and leaving stubborn stains or odors.
- Detergent water: Fill a bowl with warm (but not hot) water and add a mild dishwashing detergent. Avoid detergents that are harsh or heavily scented, as these can leave marks on the plastic.
- Scrubbing, washing: Use a soft sponge or bristle brush to thoroughly wash the cup and parts. Don't forget to clean the threaded parts and the inner edges of the lid, as dirt can easily build up there.
- Disinfection (as needed): If you feel your shaker needs extra cleaning—for example, after an illness or if there are persistent odors—you can also use a mild disinfectant solution. A mixture of one part vinegar and three parts water is excellent for disinfecting plastic surfaces without damaging the material.
- Rinse thoroughly: Once you're done, rinse the cup and all parts thoroughly under running water to remove any detergent residue.
- Drying: If possible, let the shaker cup dry disassembled. Ventilation between wet parts prevents mold and bacteria from growing. If you're in a hurry, wipe it dry with a soft dish towel or paper towel.
3. Machine wash
If the manufacturer says the shaker can be cleaned in the dishwasher, the easiest way is to choose a gentle program. Here too, it is important to separate the glass and its parts so that dirt can be washed from all parts.
Hot programs that exceed 60°C are generally not recommended because the high temperature can deform or weaken the plastic. It is worth placing the glass on the top rack, where the washing is usually more gentle.
4. Prevent and remove odors
Quick rinse
Rinse your shaker as soon as possible after use. Milk and protein drinks are especially prone to leaving an unpleasant odor if left in the glass for a long time.
Baking soda
If any odor remains, fill the shaker with lukewarm water, add a tablespoon of baking soda, and let it sit for a few hours. Then rinse and wash as usual.
Lemon juice or vinegar
Citric acid and acetic acid are great deodorizers. Mix a tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice in warm water and rinse the glass with it.
5. Long-term storage and care
Once the shaker is completely dry, always store it in a dry, ventilated place, preferably with the cap open (for example, remove the cap or do not screw it on completely). This will help to avoid musty odors and prevent mold from growing.
If you find that the plastic is old, scratched, or discolored, it may be worth getting a new shaker, as damaged material absorbs odors more easily and can also affect the taste of your drinks.
Extra tips and precautions
Never with hot drinks
The plastic shaker is not suitable for storing boiling water or very hot drinks because the high heat can deform the material.
Regular cleaning
Do at least a quick rinse after each use, so deep cleaning will take much less effort.
Gentle shaking
Always make sure the cap and lid are securely closed when shaking. Be careful with the threads as you open and close them constantly to prevent them from cracking and to ensure they stay tight for a long time.
